Until now, applying for any kind of benefits, Medicaid, cash assistance, child care assistance or food stamps has required almost inexhaustible patience and more time than most people should reasonably expect to spend. If the marathon waiting session includes children in tow, its a sure bet many benefit seekers feel lucky to leave with their sanity - they may have even forgotten what service they came for in the first place. Well, its a new day. The process is changing! The COMPASS (Common Point of Access to Social Services) System provides for online access to food stamp applications. It is too early to tell how well COMPASS works, but its very existence is an important step in the right direction for families. Eventually, applications for cash assistance, Medicaid and other services will be available as well. I’m looking forward to that. It isn’t reasonable to ask anyone to invest what amounts to the number of hours spent on a part-time job just to get a little help.
